And don’t fret, this list does not include the ones that break your heart. Most of them will be from the 2000s, the age of true romance anime. Anyway, on with the list.

Tsurezure Children

Saying “I love you” can be extremely nerve-wracking, especially if you are experiencing the emotion for the very first time; the synopsis of this anime will not do enough justice to all the different types of relationships that the high schoolers try to navigate. Especially, the four couples the series focuses on. This is an omnibus of these four relationships as they are also connected through the various friendships that get created over time amongst them.

Kimi No Todoke

Once known as the purest couple in shoujo, Sawako is a girl who is bullied for her resemblance to the Ring-ghost, Sadako. Shouta sees Sawako for who she is, and the two end up falling for each other, however, it takes a while for them to realize it because of growing adolescence. We all know, and can relate to high school being a confusing time for everyone, and yet, the romance, the familiar setting, and the characters, all make you feel warm and fuzzy on a lonely day.

Wotakoi: Love is Hard for Otaku

Don’t have a partner who watches anime and shares your love for the 2D? Oh, don’t worry, that’s okay. This anime will make you feel like the main character when you watch four otakus successfully sustain the cutest, sweetest relationships. Yes, the stuff of dreams, tell me about it.

Tonari No Kaibutsu-kun

Tonari No Kaibutsu-kun

The English title of this anime might put you off a little, but do not be misled. It is about a highly competitive Shizuku, meeting the school troublemaker, Haru. She notices and judges him for making sudden inappropriate gestures at her, only to later find out that Haru is the guy who beat her in the exams and topped the semesters without even studying. Frustrated and annoyed, she finds herself getting more and more drawn to him and eventually also ends up socializing and making friends. Very cute and wholesome indeed.

Kaichou-Wa Maid Sama

Tough all-rounder Misaki Ayuzama maintains decorum at her recently co-ed turned high school very strictly, but she secretly works part-time at a maid cafe. Can she keep this a secret from Usui Takumi, the school’s most sought-after boy who takes an interest in her? Hilarious, wholesome, and with all the 25 episodes available on YouTube, this one will give you all the feels to make up for that void in your heart this V-Day.

Toradora

Toradora

This is again a classic 2000s anime. It focuses on Ryuuji, a guy who is infamous for his delinquent looks but is nothing close to that reputation in reality, and Taiga, who is the absolute opposite. A hot-tempered and violent girl, despite her short, sweet appearance. ‘Appearances can be deceptive’, eh? The two become friends and agree to help the other with their crushes, which seems simple enough. However, they soon end up falling head over heels for each other.

Kamisama Hajimemashite

Kamisama Hajimemashite

Oh, you don’t want it all to be realistic romance stories? Do not worry, we’ve got you. Momozono finds refuge in a temple guarded by a familiar Tomoe, the same day she is left homeless by her father’s debts. As she finds herself putting her all into becoming a good God, she also ends up falling in love with the cursed familiar and eventually relieving him of his past sins. Kamisama Hajimemashite combines the supernatural, hopeless love, conflicts, and dire obstacles. It is very beautiful to watch and is sure to warm your heart.

Chuunibyou Demo Koi Ga Shitai

Chuunibyou Demo Koi Ga Shitai

Imagine being delusional and creating a whole world inside your head, fighting battles and believing you have supernatural powers. Now imagine having a boy who starts to love you and goes to the extremes to save you from your worst nightmares. Rikka and Yuuta are an iconic duo, as we later find out. Even Yuuta was a Chuunibyou and he tries hard to help Rikka cope with her father’s death. He also helps her with gradually making new friends. This anime will hit you in the right spot and is a perfect watch for this V-day.

Kaguya Sama-Love is War

Kaguya Sama-Love is War

With the third season coming as early as this April, Kaguya Sama is one of the most beloved romance anime(s) out there. Two tsundere students, who happen to be at the top of their school fall for each other- what can go wrong? Oh, everything. To the point that even 2 seasons later, their ego has not let them confess to each other while their friends watch them make up excuses to spend time together. Talk about high IQ romance.

Yahari Ore no Seishun Love Comedy Wa Machigatteiru

Oregairu

Oregairu is probably the most realistic romance anime on this list. It portrays the story of two extremely anti-social high school kids, the pessimistic Hachiman Hikigaya and, the shrewd and beautiful Yukino Yukinoshite. Due to their circumstances, they however end up in a club together with the ever-joyous Yui where they give advice to the other high schoolers. It provides a deep view of their psychologies and of how, somehow in the process, a love triangle forms between the three. The ending is worth sitting through the whole anime, even if at times you might end up having an existential crisis. But hey, a good anime is worth it.

We hope this list provides you with the warmth that you deserve this Valentine’s Day, whether you choose to watch them alone, or with your special one. In case you are a student, you’re in for a ride where you’ll probably be able to relate to most of these anime(s). However, if you are an adult, be ready to feel ever so nostalgic as you begin to recall how your heart fluttered when you saw that person for the first time, young, silly, and full of hope.
